The healthiest options to go for when visiting McDonalds – the best burger and nuggets surprise

With nearly 90 McDonald’s restaurants across the country, the tempting fast food options are hard to avoid and even harder to resist.

But you don’t have to deprive yourself of the abundance of tasty treats from McDonald’s if you’re trying to make your diet a bit more healthy. The fast food chain has plenty to choose from if you’re attempting to cut down on calories.

Generally, a healthy recommended daily calorie intake for women is about 2,000 calories a day 2,500 for men. With calories being displayed on menus across the country as part of the national Obesity Policy and Action Plan, it is easier than ever to keep an eye on what we are eating.

McDonald’s themselves even offer an online Nutrition Calculator , which allows users to track what’s in all their favourite menu items.

Here are the healthiest options to choose next time you treat yourself to a McDonalds:

Wraps and Salads

You may be surprised to find out that a McDonald’s salad may not even be the best option when looking for a low-calorie fast food option.

While a regular old side salad is just 15 kcal, the Crispy Chicken and Crispy Chicken and Bacon salads are 261 kcal and 311 kcal respectively.

If you are really craving a burger, there are plenty with a similar or even lower calorie count than McDonald’s salads.

McDonald’s have a range of burgers available under 500 calories.

A regular hamburger is just 250 kcal, and a regular cheeseburger is just 301 kcal.

A double cheeseburger has 445 kcal and a bacon double cheeseburger is still under the 500 mark.

If you just can’t resist the classic Big Mac, it’s not as bad as some of the other options at just over 500 kcal.

If you’re trying to eat healthier, avoid the BBQ Bacon Stack and Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese – these two tempting burgers both have over 700 calories.

A four piece Veggie Dippers comes to 321 kcal

Fries and Sides

A medium size McDonald’s fries is a respectable 337 kcal while mozzarella cheese dippers are 256 kcal.



A regular McDonald’s chips falls under 350 kcal

If you’re looking for an even lighter side-snack try a fruit bag at 46 calories, or cucumber sticks for just 12.

Breakfast

If you are tempted to skip a home cooked breakfast and opt for McDonald’s tempting breakfast treats instead, the are still a few healthier options.

The lowest calorie McMuffin is the Egg and Cheese with under 300 kcal.



A McDonald’s Hash Brown is just 136 kcal.

And if you want something sweet, try a Muffin with Jam for just 211 kcal.

Ice-cream

If you’re craving ice-cream after your meal, opt for a simple cone for 142 kcal.

But if you can’t get the delicious image of a McDonald’s McFlurry out of your head, try the Maltesers McFlurry, which comes in at less than 277 calories.



The Malteasers McFlurry comes in at 266 kcal but if you’re being really good, you can even opt for a mini size which is just 133 calories.
