Plant Based Heat vegan restaurant opens in Memphis near U of M

Plant Based Heat is the newest addition to the vegan dining options in Memphis. Located next door to Crumpy’s Hot Wings, the restaurant is at 669 S. Highland St. and will celebrate its grand opening on June 19.

Owner and chef Ralph Johnson (known by most as RJ Groove from his decades-long career as a Memphis radio personality) will serve 100{93dc336ded79d9c19a7fd46b704c562746eddfc4ab513b7b2ee0a4a79ff98b60} plant-based vegan comfort food at his new eatery near the University of Memphis.

Smoked Vegan Beyond Meat Burgers, Oyster Mushroom Burgers, “Vings” Vegan Hot Wings and Vegan Jackfruit Barbecue Sandwiches are a few of the menu staples you will find.

Owner Ralph Johnson of "Plant Based Heat" stands inside his new vegan comfort foods restaurant on Monday May 24, 2021.

“This is a transitional vegan restaurant,” said Johnson. If you want the flavors of your favorite dishes — like wings, barbecue and catfish, Plant Based Heat is the place to go. Johnson said he can make almost anything vegan.

One of the things Johnson said makes his restaurant unique is that the menu is 100{93dc336ded79d9c19a7fd46b704c562746eddfc4ab513b7b2ee0a4a79ff98b60} plant-based. “Nothing will share the same grill with meat,” he said.
